Traits are a new feature for Ship Cards, introduced with wave 9 Clone Wars expansions. It is found at the back side of the card beneath the Ship Class name. Some cards feature a XY only restriction at the beginning of the card text (e.g. Clone Gunners: Clone only). Those cards can only be equipped to ships showing the according trait.
Introducing wave 9 at a live stream FFG announced that their could be future use of ship traits in campaigns or scenario games.
